just my luck...
So the luck of Emily strikes again...I was driving down the highway at slightly over the speed limit and I was just coming over a small hill when suddenly KERCLUNK....THUMP THUMP THUMP...ding, ding, ding. THUMP THUMP, swerve, screeching halt. Some very thoughtful person lost a nice size piece of fireword in the middle of the highway and I flew right over. Now for a normal person, they would just have had a flat tire, change it and be on their way only slightly behind schedule. But for me...not so much. So, I have roadside assistance but I decided that I was an independent woman who could definitely change a flat tire. I brace myself for the high winds that were rocking my car and jump out of the car. It only took me about 10 minutes to find and get to the spare tire and jack but I got it! Then I jacked my car up and then tried to loosed the things on the tire which I found out later was something you should do before you put the car up. Anyways, the car started to fall off the jack so I decided that being independent wasn't worth loosing my arm or car over so I then called roadside assistance and within 15 minutes they had changed my tire and I was on my way. It was sunday and I knew that I wouldn't have time this week to fix the tire this week so I decided instead of driving super slow for last hour of my trip I would just stop in Bloomington and get the tire fixed then. I went to Wal-mart to get the tire fixed and the guy asked me if I just needed a new tire or if the old one could be patched to which I replied that I had NO idea and he should just look at it. So we go out to my car and he pulls the tire out and kid you not this is exactly what he says (looking at the front) "Oh, this doesn't look too bad, we can definitely just fix this (turns it over), holy shit what did you do to this, you completely bent the entire rim and we don't sell those here. You would have to go to a junkyard (ha, yay right!) or a dealership to fix that." Cue Emily crying on the phone to her brother that she didn't know what to do. Ok, to make this story end I will skip to the end. I basically had to, scratch that, chose to drive on the interstate forever going 45 mph while every semi, car, truck, and bicycle pasted me...A 3 hour drive took me 5+hours. AND that was my Sunday!

Scared
You know the saying "he looked like he was going to kill you", well I experienced that "look" first hand today. Oh course, I can't tell you the specifics but what I can tell you is that I have never been more scared in my life. As I looked into the eyes of the person who would have undoubtedly punched me if I got close enough, I realized "man, my life must have been utterly and completely sheltered because I have never truly been scared of another human being until this point." In the end, everyone was fine but I really feel like I am truly a grown up now that I had a confrontation as such. Now, I know most of you will be thinking "Emily, stop exagerating. I'm sure it wasn't THAT bad". Well to that, I would say that I have actually really been working on being 100% truthful and been trying to cut down on the exageration, I know close your mouths...Emily is capable of change!
I got my first massage last weekend! That was super duper amazing minus the construction noises in the background and the fact that I am apparently very ticklish. Me, my sister, and a friend went to the Ozarks for a relaxing spa weekend. It was lovely but judging from the silent, quiet ride home I would say we came home more tired than when we left! It was very exciting to go on my first trip as a working girl and not feeling guilty about going shopping and getting a pedicure. Hopefully more trips will be in the near future.
Well, believe it or not that is about all the excitement in my life. Oh wait, I would like to tell you all that I have found a great, new pasttime. Secondhanding! I love going to second hand stores and turning my finds awsome pieces of decor for my little apartment. Right now I am really into old books and broaches...I think they are filled with SO much character and I LOVE the look of them. Here is a picture of what I have done with the latest book purchase. Well, actually I have no working camera so nevermind. Guess you'll just have to use your imagination. I found this great broach at the consignmnet store that my Grandma works at and it looks like it broke at some point in it's history and then was glued back together. I thought it added to it's uniqueness but my Grandma was appalled that I would even spend 50 cents on it! Ha, well, I'll just chalk it up to generation gap. Ok that's it. See you later.

my humble abode
Some of you will probably never be able to visit me and see my apartment so I thought I would put a few pictures up of my place. The apartment situation is such a sweet setup for me but it does mean I had to change my expectations for a living space. But after I decorated a bit, it really is quite cozy and perfect for my first place!

My future herb garden hopefully
Random curtain that I made out of necessity but kind of like now
Living room looking out from the kitchen
Living room photo arrangement trial...can't decide if I like it or not.
Bedroom...I think the lamp might be my favorite part so fa
dresser top
Finally got my jewelery organized!

How do people do this??
Today, was the first day I have been up earlier than 9:30 in 2 1/2 months! Talk about rough. So tired. Last night, I tried on my uniform and realized that I needed khaki pants so at 9pm on a Sunday night, I went to look for the worst thing in all of womans fashion. I found some (at target) but after wearing them today found a renewed hatred for those awful things. I just don't understand why they can't just make khaki's like they make jeans, it cannot be that difficult. I mean literally, I have had enough extra fabric in the thighs and length of the khakis to make awhole other pair. Geez...
So, besides the whole khaki saga, the first day of my career was rather uneventful. I made my way to orientation, leaving an hour early and guess what?, I got there 45 minutes early. I walked in to the room and it was a windowless room with about a hundred chairs and classical music playing. Now whoever thought that putting 75, newly employed people (which means they have probably been sitting on their butts for a bit) in a hot, room while playing soothing, classical music was not thinking too clearly. But once the classical music ended, it was ok. I learned so much about hospital and I really think it is going to be a great place to work. They are really dedicated to following their mission and I was shocked when they encouraged us to pray with the patients!
I am so excited to get started in the career that I feel like I've been working towards for the majority of my life. OT has brought me quite alot of happiness in life in the last years. Through OT school, I gained some awesome friends who I absolutely loved hanging out with this weekend. So fun to be with people who have similar senses of humor and interests. OT has provided me with a seemingly great job that might just be perfect for me. OT has taught me more about myself through the struggles and triumphts in school. OT has also provided me with a passion to help people with disabilities in other countries. And all these blessings propell me to the realization that God has been leading me into a career that is perfect for me! And best part of OT, I get to do crafts!
Here are some pictures of the SUNBURST! mirrors that I made.

first time ever
So I thought I would try blogging to keep up with some changes in my life. I am starting my new job on Monday, moving 6 hours away from my family and friends. I am feeling quite overwhelmed with all this change. Let me just tell you that I don't really handle change all that well. There is a story from my childhood that I am told nearly every Christmas. It goes something like this...Dad came home early on Christmas eve from work and apparently was bored so he decided to change the living room furniture around. He recruited all my sisters to help and they moved everything all around. Suddenly, my sister says, "Where's Emily?" Well, they search for me and found me sitting in the bathroom crying uncontrollably. When asked what was wrong, I cried..."why is Dad changing everything right before Christmas?!" So, anyways.....I don't like change. But the truth is when things are constant I say "I'm bored" but when things change, I freak out. So I am moving forward trusting that God is directing my life.
Since graduating (over 2 months ago) and passing my boards (YAY!), I have taken up diy (do it yourself) projects. Until recently, I was calling them crafts but then I realized how nerdy (I can't believe I just said that) it sounded so now they are diys. Man, I digress really quickly. Anyways, my most recent diy are starburst mirrors. They are made from circle mirrors and bamboo skewers and some spray paint. Super easy and so fun! There is just something about creating something with your own brain and hands that makes you feel needed or worthy or maybe just happy. I'll post some pics of my latest creations when I get them hung in my apartment. All these diys started when I was procrastinating studying for my boards. I went to my sister's house for a week to "focus" on my studies and I came across 120 ways to transform a t-shirt. Well, obviously I could NOT pass this up so I started trying some of them flowers and scarves and such. It was fun so I got on pinterest and started searching for other things to occupy my time. I would highly encourage everyone to do this even if you don't have a ton of free time, there are so many great ideas out there.
okey dokey, guess this is my first post. They might get more interesting as my life gets a little busier other than sleeping till noon and spray painting whatever my latest project ~
